What are you supposed to do with a Buddha statue?

Any false idol comments will be ignored, just saying, he is only a false idol to YOU not me.

Whatever people answer above, buddhists are usually very careful about how to treat a statue of the Buddha or any other enlightened being. The reason you do this is because you as a buddhist probably want to train your mind in seeing the Buddha and his teachings as something very valuable for you - it's actually the only thing that can save you (or actually, so you don't confuse it with Christian thinking, the Buddha and his teachings is the only thing that can show and teach you how you can save yourself!).

If you want to really change your thoughts in a better way, you have to get used to always remembering the Dharma, which means you always think of the Buddha as the teacher of the most precious and important thing in the world, and the Dharma as this precious thing itself (and of course the third jewel, the sangha, as those who can show that the teachings really work and help you understand how to apply them).

To train yourself so you will eventually always and spontaneously see them in this way, you also always try to treat the representation of the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha as if they were the "real thing". This leads us to the answer to your question:

You always keep a Buddha statue (or picture) in a clean place. You always keep it high, i e higher than other statues or pictures, and higher than your own head if you for example sit on your cushion in front of the altar, where you usually have either a statue or a picture of the Buddha. When you move, touch or clean the statue, you do it with respect, as if it were a real person. Traditionally in Asia, touching someone's head is a sign of disrespect, and this mean you also try not to touch the head, and especially not to lift the statue in the head (you wouldn't lift your baby in the head, would you?). Rubbing the head of the Buddha to get luck, as someone suggested above, would be seen as highly disrespectful (but then, obviously, that person was thinking of the "laughing Buddha", not the historical Buddha).

This means, you could place the statue on an altar, on a bookshelf, on frieze on the wall, or any other place, as long as it is high and clean.

One more thing you could keep in mind, is that it is seen as disrespectful to show the soles of the feet towards the Buddha (or any other enlightened being or ordained monk or nun), which means you would prefer not to put the statue at the foot-end of your bed or any other place you often lie down (to watch TV or whatever). Many people also feel it appropriate to show yourself naked (not to speak of having sex) within sight of the Buddha picture or statue, which could make your bedroom or bathroom a problematic place. If you don't have other possibilities, you can easily solve this problem by simply covering the picture or statue with a piece of cloth, behind the doors of a locker/cup-board, or something similar, and just uncover it when you do your meditations or practices.

In the same way, it is customary to show respect for your Dharma books (and actually every texts that mentions the Buddha and similar themes), through keeping them higher than other books, never putting them on the floor or somewhere you use to sitting down (like chairs, meditation cushions, etc), not touching them with dirty fingers, protecting them with a cloth or other cover when you move them, and so on.

All these things I mentioned shouldn't be seen as rules, musts, demands or guilt-inducing rigidities, but merely as advice on how to use your Dharma material to actually training your own mind. That's always the reason behind what you do in Buddhism. Everything is about training your mind, not about blindly following abstract rules you don't understand.
