Yin Ride
Will this commute be too exhausting? ?

Forthcoming in February, our office will be moving to a rural area, to cut cost in fees. That means that my daily commute will increase to about 33 kilometres one-way, or 66 kilometres round trip. About 28 kilometres of the route is on a light-traffic single carriageway with a speed limit of 80 km/h. It is a straightaway with some rolling hills of about 3 to 6% gradients. Yin is suggesting that it will be too strenuous for me to ride at least 66 kilometres, 5 days per week. Moreover, it will be hopeless for me to keep up with her cars. How accurate is her assessment?

HI Kate
The distance should not be any big problem for you. Given that you have been regularly riding about 2/3rds this distance for quite some time. You may even be able to sprint the whole way. Many people will say it is too far, but there are also many cyclists that commute this far and even farther. (Weather will be an issue of course)

The unknowns are how long and how much physical work is involved in your average work day. Adding at least two (probably nearer three with clean up time) hours to your normal working day has the potential to severely limit social activities.

If all but 5 km is speed limited at 80km/h, then I doubt, even you could keep up with Yin. Unless Yin choose to drive well below the speed limit to give you a chance. Most other motorists would consider another motorist moving well below the speed limit a nuisance. (could lead to road rage.)

I've got no doubt that you are up to the ride. I think Yin is right about keeping up with her cars though.
