it seems that Tibet and the Dalai Lama is the religious equivalent to the Forbidden City and Emperor of old imperial china in that it is separated from the rest of the country by cultural dogma. when the communist party of china overthrew the old regime, they closed the forbidden city and ousted the emperor. the communists also removed religion from their national structure. philosophically, these acts are similar to our separation of state and church [only we have not outlawed religion] and perhaps here lies Tibet's problem. it also seems to me that Tibet can be compared to Vatican City in that it wishes to remain separate from the rest of China.
my question is while watching the riots of students...from what do the people wish to free Tibet?
"China has been systematically destroying Tibetan culture..." That is what I see from people. Well ask yourself what is the state of Native Americans in the US today? Would you not say that the US has systematically suppressed their culture as well? The only way for any of them to "make it" in the world is to go forth and assimilate themselves into mainstream culture. What if there was a revolt from Native Americans today? I doubt many people would claim that they have been given great opportunities to live well today and no one would blame them for feeling such resentment, but do you think the US government would just allow them to take independence in the middle of the country? Obviously not. Native Americans still live largely on reservations where alcoholism and gambling have consumed much of their lives. They have little to no voice in the US. They've been largely forgotten. Tibet has been no different as part of China. Tibet has been a part of China historically for centuries, even longer than the US has been a country. It was only during the period of time when China was thrown into turmoil by invasions from western countries and later by Japan that they lost control of Tibet for a few decades. When the communists took over again, they went to reclaim all the land that was part of China before. If they had not done so, Tibet would be under the rule of some other Western country right now. Face the facts.
